Planning the Taper
We know that a significant proportion of our registered site users have a 70.3 event or even a full distance Ironman just over the horizon. Whether it's the 70.3 in Busselton on 5th May, Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie on 6th May, the Cairns Half or Challenge Cairns Ironman on 3rd June, or the Capricorn 70.3 on 19th June, you'll soon be planning your taper to race day.
The following is an excerpt taken from our article Periodisation - the basics, which outlines how to approach your taper...
"A typical periodization model involves increasing the volume and
intensity of your training sessions slowly over the weeks of your
program, reaching a peak that is held for a few weeks before rapidly
tapering off to similar levels as where you started. The longest/hardest
ssessions are completed up to two weeks before the race. The last two
weeks before a race sees training sessions reduce in volume, to
facilitate recovery and be at your peak for the race. The length and
type of taper will depend on the duration of the event. Typically, you
need to taper off longer if the event is longer."
Take our poll on the
TriathlonOz.com homepage to cast a vote for the length of taper you most prefer.
How to Survive the Taper
For some people, the challenge is "trusting" the taper. The mind is used to a much higher volume of training and the trick is to avoid the temptation to overdo it, or feeling guilty that you've not done enough. But you must taper if you wish to see your best performance on race day. Now is the time to keep your mind busy. Now is the time to clean and check all your equipment, make a race-day nutrition plan, write your mantras, and visualise yourself doing the race.
Here is a selection of books from our shop that you might find useful during the taper, plus a DVD on building confidence:
You can also download our Race Day checklist to ensure you don't forget to pack the essential stuff!
