Australia Day Triathlon - Point Walter, WA

TriathlonOz

This triathlon and duathlon event is a very popular patriotic day out for Perth's triathlon scene. Thanks to the generosity and support of Stephen Doyle, who runs the Sports Performance Summer Series triathlon events in Perth, we were able to be there on the day to give participants a chance to get to know about TriathlonOz, but unfortunately there was no time for us to race!

The weather in Perth on the day was forecast to be a scorcher hitting 40 degrees but to the surprise of everyone, the morning was very pleasant and the grounds of Point Walter in the park on the hill by the river is delightful. And thanks to a well organised event, we were packed up and home (after end of presentations) before 11am. Perfect!

The day began in the dark at 4am for us to drive to the event and setup our marquee but Stephen and his lovely wife Chris and their band of volunteer helpers were already setup and organised when we arrived. After transition had closed, tradition holds for the singing of the Australian National Anthem, Advance Australia Fair and then the race briefing commenced and everyone walked down the hill to the deep water start of the swim in the Swan River.

Many first time competitors have concerns about swimming in the Swan River, but everyone who raced on the day told us there were no jelly fish and the river never has stingers like in the ocean, and unlike the City of Perth location, this section of river is clean so there are no dirty moustaches!

The swim exit at this course however gives the runners a good opportunity to pick up some places as there's an incline of about 300m to climb to get to the bike racks.

I took a break to watch the novice and fun triathlon competitors at the transition exit and then moved up to the bike mount point. Watching this has compelled me to write an article with some tips, so that's coming soon - look out for more info in next month's newsletter.

As there was also a duathlon on the day, and we were setup near the finish line, we had to stop watching the triathlon at this point, and head back to our marquee. The finish line is always so exiting. Watching the faces of the first-time competitors cross the finish line is always so inspiring and is an important reminder of why we all do this in the first place - finding our own thrills, testing ourselves, and soaking up the elation and euphoria of the finish and knowledge of completing something that you've put effort into. You're all a winner when you cross that line.

We were thrilled to meet so many lovely people that came up to our tent. We had some of most popular triathlon training books, TriClips, and some of our merchandise and TriSuits and Cycle Jerseys to show as samples of what we offer in our online shop.

We had 156 people enter our prize draw too - which was a fabulous response! As it was a double-prize draw, we had a draw on the day plus we kept all the entries for our next prize draw (17th April). The draw on the day was won by Kirsty R, who not only won a copy of the new book "Trizophreniza", but an ExplorOz mousemat & drink coaster plus annual subscription for TriathlonOz Membership (worth $29.95). We hope that Kirsty will use the features of Membership, which include Blogs so that we can see her training diary, and race reports and anything else she has to share to inspire us!

The winner of our next prize draw in April, will receive a selection of 4 awesome books we have chosen from our range of workout guides, plus annual subscription for Membership, total value $225. This is an on-going promotion that is currently featured in the Australian Triathlete Magazine and open to anyone that clicks the register button at the top of the site and subscribes to our newsletter, so tell your friends.

It was great to meet you all. Don't forget to use the Forum to ask questions, create discussions etc. Anything goes, so long as its relevant to sport, health, fitness, well being.

See you at the next event - Men's Only Triathlon - Sunday 18th March, back at the same venue at Point Water, Bicton (3 different race distances, includes Olympic Distance and word is women can enter too).

PS: We're also trying to convince Adele (TriathlonOz Customer Service/Procurement Manager) to enter the Corporate Teams event with us. She's just starting running so we hope we can all encourage her to test herself and set a goal to work towards but she's not too keen, any tips??
