Pennefather is a nice coastal spot north of
Weipa. However, like many areas in this region it is wild and remote. Flies, crocs and
sharks are plentiful and the beaches of
Cape York are subject to significant plastic rubbish buildup being washed up from the sea. With that said, it is a great place to fish and
camp, within close proximity to
Weipa. Like many
places north of
Weipa, it is on Aboriginal land, subject to permits and restrictions that can vary so
check current location conditions and heed all signage.
From this point, you can follow the road to the west right out to the end, which gradually turns into a sandy track that takes you right to the beach. From here you can take the sandy track past some
beach huts and camping spots to the camps at Pennefather River. Beach camping spots are free both north and south of the main entrance onto the beach. 4WD access required.
