Strathgordon, located on the shore of Lake Pedder is a 2 hr 15-min drive (156 km) from
Hobart. It is set
well within the South West National Park and a short drive from the spectacular
Gordon Dam that holds back the waters of Lake
Gordon. Lake Pedder is Australia's largest fresh water lake and together with Lake
Gordon form a significant part of Tasmania's hydro electric scheme.
Strathgordon was established to build the
Gordon Dam and is almost at the end of
Gordon River Road. The area offers water sports, particularly fishing and a range of walking and hiking experiences. Abseiling down the
Gordon Dam wall is now available for the adventures.
Some maintenance staff for the hydro scheme remain at Strathgordon but a substantial part has been taken over by Pedder Wilderness Lodge which offers a range of accommodation options plus dining and other refreshment options and fuel.
