Training off the weight gain!

TriathlonOz - Michelle

After 5 weeks in the USA with no bike, nowhere to swim and only a few runs I managed to pile on a few extra kilos. So I thought I should start blogging regularly with my plan to take it off and get back into training for the start of the season.

Today, was my first ride for 5 weeks and felt like vomiting most of the ride. We spent a lot of time at high altitude in the States, and ran and hiked at altitude - think that helped the aerobic fitness but I've lost my high intensity fitness... interval running session tonight will be "interesting"!

Came home to hear the fuss about the fatal shark attack on Cottesloe Beach - ummm... not so sure about the 6.30pm Aquathlon this Friday night at Sorrento, with big shark spotted yesterday at Mullaloo but will resume my regular Friday morning swim at pool in the morning with my good friend Kate.

My usual training program is typically:

Monday: 6am run. 7pm swim squad
Tues: 6am 40K ride. 4pm run.
Wed: 6am swim or run. 4pm run or rest.
Thurs: 6am 30K ride. 6pm Interval running. Sometimes swap in kayak at 9am.
Friday: 9am swim
Sat: 5.30am long ride (3 hours). 4pm Vinyassa Flow yoga or rest.
Sunday: Rest Day or Yoga.

So, today is Thursday and I resumed the plan with a morning ride and will do intervals tonight.

Weight this morning: 61.5kg (I can't belive I hit the 60's, that's depressing). My weight typically fluctuates between 55 - 57kg so got a bit of work to do but really looking forward to it. My initial aim will be 57kg - 4.5kg to lose, hope it goes quick!

My race schedule to Xmas:

29/10: Blackwood Marathon - a 4 stage relay adventure race my good friend Kate. I am doing 2 legs, and she is doing the other 2 legs. 12k run (Kate), 8k river paddle (me), 2k cold black river swim (Kate), 18k hilly road bike ride (me) to finish line.

20/11: Bunbury Classic Olympic Distance - not confirmed.

25/11: 10k Max Grieve fun run

11/12: State Interclub Sprint triathlon

18/12: TriEvents Race 1 - Hillarys

There are some other sprint distance triathlons in between but they are not my top priority so will just assess that at the time. My intention is to aim for the longer distance events this year to build my racing endurance in preparation for the Busselton 70.3 - where I have a lot of work to get my run time down without compromising my swim and bike times. I also think the longer distance training is better for weight management.

Sat 22nd October - update
So how have I done? Let's just say I've "eased" back into things with only 3 rides, 3 runs, 1 swim, but I did fit in 1 paddling session and 1 yoga. I have lost almost 1.5kg too. I didn't original plan on racing so soon, but Kate suggested I team up with her this weekend and do the paddle leg of the Sorrento Challenge (today) as a warm-up for next weekend's Blackwood adventure race. Other than that, its been quite a struggle in every aspect run, swim, ride - it's amazing how quickly you lose your fitness in these sports. Kids gone back to school, loads of work to do, I'm more tired that I would like, not enough hours in the day! Not sure if my focus on the Bunbury OD is a bit out of reach, but we'll see how next week goes.
Some wish for it, others work for it!
